the 4 free software freedom rules:

  • freedom 0: The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose.
    • (computers start counting with 0, that’s why it is freedom 0)
  • freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish.
    • Access to the source code is a precondition for this
  • freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others.
  • freedom 3: The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others.
    • By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes.
    • Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

LibreBooting the BIOS?

Yes!

It is possible to overwrite the BIOS of some Lenovo laptops (why only some?) with a minimal version of Linux.

guide for as Free as Possible Laptop (LibreBoot x60s Atheros wifi trisquel)

Completely overwriting the first closed source software any computer starts right after power on.

Politics need to step in and demand:

  • that vendors release their hardware drivers under GPL 2/3 or as Free Software
  • sell proper documentation with the hardware (so developers can develop Open Source drivers for it)
  • allow users to overwrite the BIOS

what people / the Open Source community can do:

  • document who / hardware producer respect Open Source and Free Software principles
  • and who does not: boycott!
